Kayaking in Raja Ampat on Mutiara Laut

This is a seven-day, six-night voyage aboard Senja, a 31-metre luxury Phinisi for four guests, running Sorong to Sorong through the central islands of Raja Ampat. Sites in this itinerary include Mioskon and short hops between the Dampier Strait’s dive sites, the mangrove channels of South Gam, the Piaynemo staircase above the Star Lagoon, and Batanta’s WWII wreck.

Day

01

Sorong to Mioskon

Be welcomed by the yacht’s crew at Sorong Airport or your hotel and transferred to the harbour. While settling in Senja will leave Sorong late morning and cross to Mioskon in about five hours.

Mioskon is the first anchorage and the first check dive: calm water to sort equipment and to ease into the underwater world of Raja Ampat. The reef that surrounds the island stretches towards the east, where two slopes form a ridge draped in hard coral. At dusk the flying foxes lift off the island in their thousands. First night at anchor.

Day

02

The Dampier Strait

Day two dives into the richest water of the week at the Dampier Strait, the channel between Waigeo and Batanta where the current runs nutrient-heavy and the marine life shows for it. For divers there is Blue Magic for oceanic mantas, Cape Kri and Sardine Reef for schooling fish, and Manta Sandy, a cleaning station where reef mantas circle.

Because life sits shallow, a non-diver is in the thick of it too: the reefs off the Sawondarek and Yenbuba jetties can be snorkelled straight from the surface, and the mantas at Manta Sandy pass close enough to watch. After dark the crew can set a night snorkel over the soft coral under the jetty, torch-lit, where the epaulette sharks that give Raja Ampat its “walking sharks” move across the shallows on their fins.

Day

03

Arborek and Mansuar

Day three is the cultural heart of the week. You go ashore at the lovely island of Arborek. There you find a small Papuan village built out over the water with a jetty out front. It is covered in soft coral and home to schooling fish such as chubs and batfish. The reefs off nearby Mansuar hold turtles and sometimes reef mantas on the same tidal surge.

For anyone who wants an early start, there is a walk ashore before breakfast to a forest platform where the Red Bird of Paradise might be seen at first light. The rest of the day runs slow: kayaks and paddleboards over the lagoon, time in the village itself, and the clear waters of the reef whenever you have the urge to jump in.

Day

04

Gam, the Passage and Kabui Bay

Day four leaves the open reefs for the most curious waters in central Raja Ampat. The Passage is a narrow saltwater channel between Gam and Waigeo, barely wider than the yacht in places, walled with mangroves and soft coral: you drift it on the tide by snorkelling or kayak, jungle on both sides and fish below.

Then Kabui Bay, where limestone “mushroom” islands stand on undercut stems in flat, sheltered water, seen from the tender paddleboard. It is also home to Batu Pensil (Pencil Rock), a unique pencil-shaped rock sticking straight out of the sea. Day 4 is perfect for taking photos and explore the calm and sheltered waters with a kayak or paddleboard.

Day

05

Piaynemo and Fam

Day five is the postcard, and it earns it. At Piaynemo, a built wooden staircase climbs to the viewpoint over the star-shaped lagoon, the cluster of karst islets most people picture when they imagine Raja Ampat. The hike takes around 10–15 minutes and there are designated stops along the way.

In the water, Melissa’s Garden at Fam is a shallow hard-coral plateau thick with anthias, easy enough and with great visibility that snorkellers enjoy the site too. The Keruo Channel runs with the current for anyone wanting a livelier drift. Back at anchor there is protected water for a swim or a paddleboard before dinner or a private beach barbecue.

Day

06

Batanta and Dayang

Day six holds some adventure. At a reef at Batanta divers can explore a WWII plane wreck (P-47 Thunderbolt fighter plane) at about 26 metres and at dusk the divers drop in for the mandarin fish, which pair off and spawn for a few minutes as the daylight fades.

There is a full day ashore for anyone not on the wreck or in the water: a jungle trek to a hidden waterfall, and Kali Biru, a freshwater blue river you can swim and drift around. In the afternoon Dayang Island provides a castaway experience with private beach dinner and a last swim.

Sorong

Day 7 marks the final day of the voyage. A last breakfast and swim at anchor, then a warm farewell to the crew before a short run into Sorong and the transfer to the airport or your hotel.
