Komodo Facts
Season & Getting There
The best time to visit Komodo is between April and October. During the dry season, weather and ocean conditions are the most favourable. For yacht charters in Komodo, we recommend a minimum duration of 3 nights.
Komodo National Park is accessed through Labuan Bajo airport, with direct daily flights from Bali and Jakarta. Upon arrival at Labuan Bajo airport, your yacht’s crew will collect you for a short 10-minute drive to the harbour. Here you embark on your yacht and the journey begins.
Diving Komodo
Explore Komodo Underwater
Komodo offers some of Indonesia’s most dynamic diving and snorkelling, shaped by tides and current. The region is naturally varied: drift dives and offshore seamounts in the north, coral-rich pinnacles and manta drifts in the centre, and colder, nutrient-rich southern sites that can deliver strong macro and pelagic potential when conditions suit.
Komodo also works very well for snorkellers and beginner divers, and days can be planned around calmer reefs and protected bays. Komodo’s marine habitats are exceptionally diverse, with 1,000+ fish species and around 250+ coral species recorded, supported by nutrient-rich flows through the park’s channels and straits.
Komodo signature dive areas and sites (route dependent):
North Komodo (“Current City”): Castle Rock, Crystal Rock, The Cauldron (Shotgun), Gili Lawa passages
Central Komodo: Batu Bolong, Tatawa Besar/Kecil, Karang Makassar (Makassar Reef / Manta Point), Siaba Besar
South Komodo & South Rinca: Manta Alley, German Flag, End of the World, Horseshoe Bay / Nusa Kode (Cannibal Rock, Torpedo Point, Yellow Wall), Jimmie’s Rock
West Komodo & Banta: Banta Island reefs and west-park anchorages
Water temperatures typically range from around 22–29°C, depending on season and whether you are cruising the north/centre or cooler southern sites. Visibility often sits around 15–30 metres in good conditions, but can vary by location, tide, and upwelling—especially in the south.
Sailing Komodo
Cruising the Park’s Island Corridors
Komodo cruising unfolds in distinct zones: Central Komodo for sheltered island-hopping and iconic stops, North Komodo for scenery, current-fed channels, and seamounts, and South Komodo / South Rinca for cooler-water upwellings and dramatic volcanic scenery. The best Komodo itineraries link these regions in a comfortable flow, balancing scenic passages with time at anchor and the flexibility to adjust activities around conditions and guest preferences.
Komodo National Park is a compact charter region and perfect for guests who are first-timers. Private yacht charters and cabin voyages allow you to navigate this charter destination and discover its unique features.
Here is a brief description of Komodo’s most popular cruising sites:
Loh Buaya (Rinca Ranger Station)
A classic ranger-led walk for Komodo dragons and wildlife, with trail options that can be adapted to pace.
Loh Liang (Komodo Ranger Station)
Another strong option for dragon walks and wildlife, with routes of varying length and difficulty.
Padar Island
Ridge hikes with panoramic views over three bays—often timed early for softer light and cooler temperatures.
Karang Makassar (Manta Point area)
A well-known manta site, often paired with nearby diving around Batu Bolong, depending on conditions.
Siaba (Turtle City)
A reliable stop for turtles and gentle snorkelling, often a good fit for families and mixed groups.
Gili Lawa Darat & Gili Lawa Laut
A favourite for viewpoint hikes and access to “Current City” diving nearby—Castle Rock, Crystal Rock, and the Cauldron—excellent sites for experienced divers when timing is right.
Kalong Island
A calm evening stop to watch the flying-fox sunset as thousands of bats leave the mangroves at dusk.
Sebayur
A sheltered anchorage with easy snorkelling and check-dive-style sessions—often used as a relaxed start or finish to a cruise.
Nusa Kode
A dramatic southern coastline with rewarding diving and a wilder feel—best approached with conditions in mind.
Horseshoe Bay (South Komodo / Nusa Kode)
A signature Deep South area combining striking landscapes with well-known dive sites.
Banta Island (West Komodo extension)
A quieter add-on for guests with more time, offering a different seascape.
Batu Monco
A tranquil snorkelling stop that can feel notably quiet, with very few yachts around.

Komodo Activities
Destination Highlights
The National Park offers a wide range of highlights to suit different group styles and paces. Most private charters combine water time with short land excursions, keeping the day-to-day flow flexible around conditions.
Ranger-led walks on Rinca (Loh Buaya) or Komodo (Loh Liang) offer a close-up look at the park’s most iconic wildlife.
Manta sessions are a signature part of many Komodo routes, most commonly around Karang Makassar (Makassar Reef / Manta Point).
Komodo’s scenery is as memorable above water as below. Padar’s sunrise ridge delivers sweeping views over multiple bays
Komodo National Park features several pink-sand beaches, often paired with relaxed shore time and easy snorkelling in shallow water.
Beyond mantas, Komodo’s reefs often deliver turtles and reef fish in calmer bays, with the possibility of reef sharks on more current-fed sites.
Quiet anchorages and less-visited islands create the “castaway” moments: a swim straight off the tender, a beach walk, and time to slow down.
Komodo works particularly well for families, as the variety of anchorages and short cruising distances allow the pace to remain flexible throughout the journey.

Barefoot’s take
I am always excited going there myself. From diving to hiking, the park offers everything I want from a holiday destination. The accessibility makes it the perfect region for shorter voyages and people who have never done a yacht charter before.

Most charters begin in Labuan Bajo (LBJ) on Flores. Guests typically connect via Bali or Jakarta, then fly domestically into Labuan Bajo and transfer to the harbour for embarkation.
As a general guideline, allow USD 30–45 per person per day for Komodo National Park fees and activity-related costs. This typically covers park entry and ranger-related requirements, and may include additional charges for specific activities (such as Komodo/Rinca hikes and diving/snorkelling fees). Holiday surcharges can apply on certain dates. We will confirm exact fees for your travel dates and planned activities.
A minimum of 3 nights can work for central highlights, but we recommend 6 nights or more for a fuller itinerary. If you want to include South Komodo properly, 8–10 nights is more comfortable.
